An intimacy director (live performance/stage) or coordinator (film or TV) is a choreographer, an advocate for actors, and a liaison between actors and production for scenes that involve nudity / hyper-exposed work, simulated sex acts, and / or intimate physical contact. ​
First, I'll read the script, screenplay, or play and make notes so that I can begin preparations for the work.

Here's a brief guide on what to expect when we collaborate on creating ethical and effective moments of intimacy!

What to Expect . . .

Prep Work with director, producer, show runner (if possible), ADs, stage manager

I’ll meet with you to discuss the specifics of the scenes to get us on the same page. This can happen in person, phone or video call. Pick the best way that works for you. We’ll go over:
  • degree of physical intimacy
  • the degree of nudity
  • specifics of simulated sex in the script
  • how you are looking to shoot
  • other pertinent intimacy details
  • anything you would like me to know about the actors, the production, how you like to work, etc

​Nudity and/or Simulated Sex Riders. The production office will consult with the IC on the exact language actors are agreeing to; the rider shall be drafted by the office and approved by the IC. Riders shall be sent to the actor’s representatives (and/or to actor) a minimum of 48 hrs prior to shooting day. Each rider must be signed prior to scene photography.

Rehearsals/Shoot Day with director, producer, show runner (if possible), ADs, stage manager

Private rehearsal/blocking. If there is simulated sex: I will take a moment with the director and 1st AD or stage manager to address boundaries and consent, making sure the story is clear, and how the intimacy will be handled, cheated, masked, etc.

Prep Work with actors

After meeting with the director, I’ll have individual conversations with each actor involved (including BG, day players, stunts, & series regulars) to go over the scenes, boundaries and consent. This can happen in person, phone or video call. Pick the best way that works for you. We’ll go over:

  • specifics of the scene & pertinent intimacy details
  • closed set protocols
  • barriers and modesty garments
  • rider language
  • how to best advocate for them
  • anything else they would like me to know, concerns, special requirements, etc

Rehearsals/Shoot Day ​with actors

Prep Work with department heads (wardrobe, hair & makeup, costumes, etc)

Have a conversation with relevant department heads to be sure they are prepped for the scene(s) and actors' requirements. If needed: barriers and modesty garments, merkins and/or prosthetics are chosen / ordered / supplied.

What Is the Scope of Intimacy?

As Intimacy Professionals, we define intimacy as “nudity or hyper-exposed work, simulated sex acts, and intimate physical contact.” 
  • Simulated Sexual Acts. This refers to a scene that tells the story of sexual contact between two or more characters or an act of simulated self-stimulation.
